Instruction
The long journey begins at Safari House, where the guide gives instruction on snowmobile driving, handling and regulations.   We then change into appropriate equipment.

The Safari
Snowmobile through the fells towards the husky kennels. Get to know the nimble-pawed, intelligent sled dogs and learn about how they are bred, reared and trained. Also experience how it feels to be on a sled safari pulled by living creatures, when the roar of the car engine is replaced by the whoosh of sled runners and playful barking. Veterans joke that the most difficult part of driving a team of dogs is getting them to stop, especially if you’ve fallen into a snow drift – and the funniest is recounting your experiences clasping a glass of ‘hot toddy’ as a storm whistles through the nooks and crannies.

‘Kota’ (Lappish hut) fires then homeward bound
Grill sausages and gulp down some ‘black pot’ coffee in a real ‘kota’. Then it’s off home again by snowmobile.

A range of services can be added to the safari for an extra charge. We can tailor everything according to your wishes, be it sauna, Lappish lunch in a ‘kota’ or dinner in a top-class restaurant and everything in between. Ask, request, order; we are at your service and we’ll organise everything.

A visit to reindeer pastures
Degree of difficulty – fairly easy

Instruction
The journey begins at Safari House, where the guide gives instruction on snowmobile driving, handling and regulations. We then change into appropriate equipment.

The safari
We head off towards a small herd of reindeer, kept separate within a winter enclosure. There, the animals are protected from predators and can be given extra food, when the weather turns poor. Experience how it feels to sit on a reindeer-drawn sleigh, with snow billowing from under the animals’ hooves. After the snowy trek, get to know the reindeer and the reindeer herdsmen. Then it’s homeward bound at full speed.

Some important words to help in conversation:
vasa – a young calf experiencing its first autumn
kermikka – a young calf experiencing its second autumn
pailakka - gelding
härkä – draught reindeer
rykimä – reindeers’ rutting season
erotus – reindeer roundup ; work in which the owner separates out the animals destined for slaughter
siula – fencing used for leading the reindeer into an enclosure
parttio – small herd of reindeer
tokka - large herd of reindeer
elo – thousands of reindeer
nulppo – a bull that has lost its antlers
kahvinporo – at the bottom of the coffee pot

Frost and calotte gourmet
Degree of difficulty – fairly easy.

The safari
We rev up our engines and speed across fields and through the wilderness until we arrive at the lean-to.
The guide kindles crackling campfires, which keep the chill winds and freezing temperatures at bay. A sumptuous lunch of fresh Lappish ingredients is cooked over an open fire or a hearth in an old cabin. We guarantee you’ll be hungry, but we have the power to fill you with our flame-grilled delights.

Home again
Sometimes the lunch will make you sleepy – but not until after you’ve finished. We then shuttle quickly back home.

Lisämaksusta safariin voi liittää erilaisia palveluita. Räätälöimme toiveidenne mukaisesti illanvieton kelosaunassa, päivällisen huippuravintolassa ja kaikkea siltä väliltä. Kysy, toivo, tilaa; me järjestämme ja palvelemme.

Instruction

The safari
The safari, in Sami ‘muotke’, is exciting and varied. Sometimes, we drive along trails, which take us to places with the  most harmonious names – meltos, pahka, tieva – sometimes we toil over hills covered in thick snow.
Once we reach the old mining village, it is as if we have been transported into an old movie. Only the rumbling of the snowmobiles reminds us that, behind the blackened huts, there are probably no old gold panners in slouch hats. We light fires and make lunch. At another resting place, we’ll hang our kettle on the rail, put our sausages in the fire and warm up the bread.

Evening twilight
In the deep midwinter, the Lappish day is short. It is a silver twilight between two periods of darkness. But spring is different. In March the days lengthen and the sun radiates. Then you’ll need sunblock on your face if you take this safari.
The shadows are deeper when we head home. Sometimes somebody thinks he may have seen some bear tracks in them.

A range of services can be added to the safari for an extra charge. We can tailor everything according to your wishes, be it an evening in a wood sauna, dinner in a top-class restaurant, overnight accommodation and everything in between. Ask, request, order; we are at your service and we’ll organise everything.
